Polaris Ascent is a route‑planning puzzle where you guide a mountaineer up a procedurally generated peak, choosing paths that balance altitude gain, oxygen supply, and rest stops. Your objective is to reach the summit within a limited number of moves – each move consumes oxygen, and rest stops replenish it but cost valuable steps. Success is measured by reaching the pole star marker at the summit.
The ascent includes 250 route maps, each with different terrain – icy slopes, rocky faces, snow fields, and crevassed glaciers. Early maps offer straightforward zigzag paths; later maps present multiple forks with hidden avalanches and thin‑air zones that increase oxygen consumption. New “expedition routes” are added seasonally to simulate changing weather patterns.
The visual style is crisp and alpine: bright snow, deep blue skies, and dramatic shadow contrasts. The mountain is shown in isometric view, with clear elevation markers and interactive waypoints. Animations of the climber are smooth, and the interface displays oxygen levels and step counts prominently, aiding tactical decisions.
A “pathfinder” overlay suggests the safest next step, and you may collect “summit flags” to unlock alternative climber skins. Offline saving and pause‑anywhere functionality are included.
